Tales from the Loop is an American science fictiondrama web television series based on the art book of the same name by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag. The series premiered on Amazon Prime Video on April 3, 2020.^[1] All eight episodes of the first season were released simultaneously.

In October 2000, the USS Cole was attacked by suicide bombers, while in port in Aden, Yemen, for refueling. The attack was attributed to al Qaeda and foreshadowed the attack on the United States. Tales from the Loop follows the interconnected lives of the residents in the fictional town of Mercer, Ohio. Mercer is home to the Mercer Center for Experimental Physics, an underground facility known as the Loop. It is here that researchers attempt to 'make the impossible possible'.

On July 17, 2018, it was announced that Amazon had given the production a series order for a first season consisting of eight episodes. Executive producers include Matt Reeves, Adam Kassan, Rafi Crohn, Nathaniel Halpern, Mark Romanek, Mattias Montero, Johan Lindström, and Samantha Taylor Pickett. Halpern serves as showrunner and Romanek directed the pilot episode. Production companies involved with the series include 6th & Idaho, Indio, Amazon Studios, and Fox 21 Television Studios.^[8][7][9]

Tales from the Loop is based on drawings, specifically the 2014 narrative art book of the same name by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag; also drawing inspiration from the fact Stålenhag never fully explains what the science fiction objects he depicts do or where they come from.^[10] The team, headed by visual effects producer Andrea Knoll, attempted to preserve the 'painterly feeling' of Stålenhag's artwork,^[11] gaining them a Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Supporting RoleEmmys nomination.^[12] In his attempts to 'crack the code' of Stålenhag cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth chose to shoot night scenes during dusk instead.^[13]

Reception[edit]

On Rotten Tomatoes the season 1 has a 'Certified fresh' approval rating of 84% based on 62 reviews, with an average rating of 7.28/10.^[14] On Metacritic season 1 has a score of 68% based on reviews from 14 critics.^[15]

David Baird from the B.C. Catholic characterizes the series as 'a set of loosely interrelated meditations upon ephemerality, the impact of technology, and human vulnerability infused with a mild science fiction savour' and considers it 'a beguiling fusion of forward-looking nostalgia'.^[16] Joshua Thomas from The Michigan Daily simply considers it 'superb sci-fi'; 'exactly what good sci-fi should look like.'^[17] Writing for Firstpost, Prahlad Srihari thinks its 'wide shots, the symmetrical frames, and the play of light and space all do justice to Stålenhag's retrofuturistic vision'.^[18] According to The Verge's Joshua Rivera, 'Tales from the Loop is so pretty it breaks your heart.'^[19] Writing for Slashfilm, Hoai-Tran Bui thinks the show explores 'universal elements of grief, aging, parenthood, loneliness, and love' but also that it 'often toes the line between beguiling and boring'.^[20]Polygon's Charlie Hall meanwhile, was left 'feeling uneasy and confused.'^[21]

The mother and three sisters of a Black teen who was killed by police in Wisconsin were “snatched” from their vehicles and arrested Thursday while “peacefully protesting,' a lawyer for the family said.

Alvin Cole’s mother, Tracy Cole, and sister Tristiana Cole were also taken to the hospital following the arrest in Wauwatosa, a suburb of Milwaukee where the 17-year-old boy was fatally shot in February. The teen’s family was among at least 24 protesters who were taken into custody amid a curfew Thursday night following a decision not to charge the officer who killed Alvin Cole.

Attorney Kimberley Motley said it’s “absolutely disgusting and abhorrent” that police “manhandled,” “attacked and snatched” the four women from their vehicles. At least four journalists were also detained, with two of them accusing officers of beating them with nightsticks.

The Wauwatosa Police Department confirmed that numerous protesters were arrested, but the agency said the suspects engaged in “unlawful demonstrations,” some of which involved vehicles parading through the streets, “honking car horns and blocking all directions of traffic.”

Police said some of the protesters also threw rocks at an unmarked police van and that one person pointed a gun at someone who was inside the vehicle.

It was the second consecutive night of unrest in the city following a prosecutor’s decision this week not to charge Officer Joseph Mensah, who’s also Black, in the deadly shooting. The Cole family and racial justice protesters want the city to immediately fire the officer and replace Police Chief Barry Weber.

Investigators say Alvin Cole had a gun and fired it during the deadly encounter with Mensah outside Mayfair Mall. The teen, who apparently shot himself in the arm, refused commands to drop the weapon before the officer opened fire, authorities said.

The officer was suspended in July, but a final decision on his employment has not been made.

Multiple neighboring law enforcement agencies and the Wisconsin National Guard have been called Wauwatosa to help respond to the protests. The city’s police department said National Guard members were presented at several locations Thursday but did not arrest anyone.

Two of the reporters who were detained work for the conservative news outlet Daily Caller. The pair, Shelby Talcott and Richie McGinniss, said police repeatedly beat them with nightsticks, even after they identified themselves as members of the media.

“@RichieMcGinniss and I just got detained/almost arrested,” Talcott wrote on Twitter. “Officers kicked me and hit me with a billy club and repeatedly hit Richie with a club (we were not resisting). Luckily, an officer came while we were waiting in the police van and recognized that we were press.”

Photos posted on social media show the reporters with multiple injuries following the incident.

Motley said Alvin Cole’s sisters were released Friday but his mother was still in the hospital receiving treatment. A video that was live-streamed on Facebook captured audio of her arrest.

“I’m Mrs. Cole, Alvin’s mother,” the 48-year-old woman repeatedly screamed as officers pulled her out of her car.

“I can’t believe y’all did this to me. Y’all killed my son,” she yelled, before saying “I can’t breathe' multiple times.

.@realblairnelson and @RichieMcGinniss, from my understanding, were told to leave and complied. Several officers then chased the boys down right as they reached our car & forced the rest of us out of the vehicle before making arrests. Richie captured audio of the incident.

“They’re not just violating the rights and disrespecting the rights of the Cole family,” she told reporters. 'They’re violating and disrespecting your rights. Everyone has the right to peaceful protest. Everyone has the constitutional right to freedom of speech.

“It’s outrageous that they are here targeting protesters, journalists and the Cole family,” she said. “What happened last night is absolutely disgusting.”
